In a recent episode of Steve & Natali: Off The Air, Dr. David Jiang of The Oregon Clinic Urology joins his patient and host Steve Dunn for a candid conversation about how prostate cancer care has evolved. They discuss warning signs and early detection, evolving screening practices, and advances in treatment.

Screening is becoming more individualized

Dr. Jiang explains how the approach to screening has evolved beyond relying on a prostate exam, single Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) number, or a one-size-fits-all age recommendation. Patients, especially those at higher risk, should not wait for something to feel wrong before asking their primary care provider about whether screening makes sense for them.

Treatment is no longer one-size-fits-all

When treatment is needed, Dr. Jiang emphasizes shared decision-making. Treatment decisions depend on the cancer’s risk level, the patient’s health, and the patient’s priorities. Expanded treatment options include active surveillance, minimally invasive robotic surgery, increasingly precise radiation therapy, and focal therapies like NanoKnife which target the cancer while limiting damage to nearby healthy tissue.

Awareness and early detection remain important, but so does understanding how prostate cancer care continues to advance. If you have questions about your risk, PSA testing, or newer treatment options, talk with your primary care provider or ask for a referral to a urologist.
