Health Resources
We recommend that you have a baseline skin check with your dermatologist to detect any suspicious moles or unusual lesions. Your doctor or practitioner can then recommend the frequency of your ongoing skin checks. Check your own skin monthly to detect any changes early on.
A complete skin exam at our clinic is a visual inspection of your skin. A full skin screening of your body is recommended. A gown is provided for privacy. The complete skin exam takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. If suspicious lesions are found, the physician will typically recommend a biopsy to rule out skin cancer. This procedure can be performed in the office, usually at the time of your skin exam.
Choosing the best skin care products for your skin type can be confusing. The Oregon Clinic Portland Dermatology carries several lines of hypoallergenic products carefully selected by our board-certified dermatologists. For professional advice on the best skin care products for your skin type, schedule a skin care evaluation with their Aesthetic Nurse. The evaluation is complimentary for our existing patients.
Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder that causes red, scaly patches on the limbs, trunk, scalp, and other parts of the body. It is not contagious.
Warts tend to heal on their own within a few years, once the body’s immune system recognizes the virus as foreign and starts to attack the underlying infection. However, warts can also be removed. Warts have a tendency to return, so repeated treatments may be necessary. Common treatments include:
- Occlusion—covering the wart in a bandage or strip of tape
- Over the counter medications (salicylic acid)
- Cryotherapy (freezing off)
- Electrosurgery (burning off)
- Prescription medications
- Other treatments for hard to heal cases
Excessive exposure to the harmful UV rays of the sun as a child can predispose a person to skin cancer, including melanoma. However, other factors such as genetics and skin type are also involved. Read more about skin cancer.
