Dr. Patrick Stauffer specialized in gastroenterology because it brings together the parts of medicine he loves most: solving complex problems, building long-term relationships, and performing procedures that can make an immediate difference. He believes that patients are not a collection of symptoms or test results. They come with a story, a family, a job, and a life that is widely affected by their digestive condition. Dr. Stauffer finds that listening carefully to a patient’s story and looking at the bigger picture leads to the right diagnosis and a treatment plan that fits the person. His goal is to make sure every patient feels heard, understood, and involved in decisions about their care.
Dr. Stauffer focuses his practice on inflammatory bowel disease and general gastroenterology. He has been involved in research on inflammatory bowel disease, the gut microbiome, and autoimmune liver disease, which shapes his evidence-based approach to patient care. He enjoys teaching and believes that taking time to educate patients helps them feel confident and in control of their health. Watching patients regain their health and confidence over time is one of the most fulfilling parts of his work.
Dr. Stauffer grew up in Portland and considers it a privilege to practice medicine in the community that helped shape him. He loves the easy access to hiking, biking, the coast, and the mountains. Outside of the office, he spends most of his free time exploring Portland with his wife and two young children, always on the lookout for new parks, restaurants, and family adventures. He is a lifelong baseball fan and plays in a local adult league whenever he gets the chance.
