Marcella Shook did not set out to become a therapist; her original goal was to drive change in systems and lead social programs. However, along the way she kept encountering kids who were struggling from the effects of getting into trouble, quietly pulling away from everyone around them or frozen in fear. As a counselor, she believes that every behavior is a form of communication, and finding a way to meet a child or youth’s underlying need uncovers a pathway to confidence, self-identity, and healing.
Marcella brings a creative, strengths-based approach to her work, tapping into what families already have and building from there. Her background in wraparound care and crisis mental health for children, youth, and families sharpened her ability to build trust quickly, sit comfortably with uncertainty, and stay curious to help move things toward a better or safer place. Sessions with Marcella often take shape through art, games, and play. She is equally at ease with conversations that flow with an activity and with nonverbal interactions.
Outside of the office, Marcella is most at home near the water, whether she is swimming, surfing, or simply floating. Her household of five includes her two children, husband, and one very fluffy older dog. Together they enjoy playing games, taking walks, and dropping in on friends.
