Dr. Janis Howatt compares practicing Internal Medicine to detective work. She listens to a patient’s story, follows clues, and uses her expertise to come up with a solution and a plan. Dr. Howatt enjoys being an Internist because she learns something every day and values relationships with colleagues and patients.
Dr. Howatt has seen the practice of medicine evolve from handwritten prescriptions and slow-moving medical discoveries into today’s digital environment of rapid advances in understanding disease processes and breakthrough discoveries of effective treatments and cures. The constant for her has been her focus on patient centered care while diagnosing and treating a broad range of conditions.
Portland is Dr. Howatt’s hometown. She loves being near family, surrounded by the natural beauty of the land. She appreciates the easy access to recreational and cultural activities, and the mix of personalities and cultures that make the city so unique. Outside of the office, she enjoys exercise classes, long walks and hikes with friends, and trips to the coast. She also loves visiting her adult children, taking on creative projects around the house, and planting something new in the vegetable garden each spring. She listens to audiobooks on her commute, and every Sunday you will find her with a copy of the Oregonian.
