Dr. Andrew P. Mahoney is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in shoulder and elbow surgery in Portland, Oregon. He chose orthopedic surgery because it combines science, complex problem-solving, and technical skill with the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
Few physicians have the opportunity to help an athlete return to competition, help a parent lift a child without pain, or help a mechanic return to overhead work. For Dr. Mahoney, restoring function can be just as rewarding when the goal is simply getting a good night’s sleep without shoulder pain.
Dr. Mahoney treats a wide range of patients, from elite athletes seeking peak performance and weekend tennis players hoping to return to the activities they enjoy to older adults who want to remain active and independent. He treats many conditions of the shoulder and elbow and offers both minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery and complex open procedures, including shoulder replacement.
Because every patient has different goals, Dr. Mahoney believes treatment should be individualized. He takes time to understand each patient’s symptoms, lifestyle, activity level, and expectations before developing a treatment plan. When surgery is appropriate, his goal is to provide thoughtful, evidence-based care focused on restoring function and helping patients return to the activities that matter most to them.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Mahoney enjoys everything that makes Portland and the Pacific Northwest special. He is happiest outdoors, whether skiing at Mt. Hood, biking around Portland, or playing golf. He and his wife are raising their three children in the Portland community and enjoy exploring the many outdoor, cultural, and culinary opportunities throughout Oregon.
Dr. Mahoney is fluent in Spanish.
