We condemn anti-Asian violence.

I, like you, am sickened by the shooting of eight people, including six Asian women, by a white man in Atlanta last week. My heart goes out to the friends and family of the victims. While we do not yet know with certainty the motives around this senseless tragedy, this disgraceful act appears to be part of a growing pattern of anti-Asian violence and I feel for all those experiencing the fear of identity-based harassment and violence, particularly since the start of COVID.

As healthcare providers, we take care of our patients’ health and wellbeing. We have a particular responsibility not just to speak out against race and gender-based violence, but to actively work to create an environment where everyone feels safe and welcome and where all of our patients get the best possible care. This will be the focus of our expanded Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts going forward.

I continue to be grateful for the commitment of our physicians and staff to a safe and supportive workplace and to taking care of our patients and their families, even during these times of tragedy.
