The Oregon Clinic

Samuel V. Bartholomew, MD, FACS, plastic and reconstructive surgeon with The Oregon Clinic, was recently elected as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He had been an associate member for six years.

Dr. Bartholomew is a double board-certified plastic surgeon and specializes in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery of the face, breast, body and hand.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be part of a network of respected physicians. The college has historically been a very important organization for surgeons in the United States across all disciplines,” he said.

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient by setting high standards for surgical education and practice.

Members of the American College of Surgeons are referred to as “Fellows.” The letters FACS after a surgeon’s name mean that the surgeon’s education and training, professional qualifications, surgical competence and ethical conduct have passed a rigorous evaluation and have been found to be consistent with the high standards established and demanded by the College. Total membership is over 75,000 including more than 4,000 members from outside the United States and Canada and more than 2,600 Associate Fellows.

Dr. Bartholomew was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and grew up in Washington, Virginia and Wyoming. He graduated from the University of San Diego with an English degree and continued to live and work in San Diego prior to attending the University of California, San Francisco, (UCSF) School of Medicine. At UCSF, Dr. Bartholomew was awarded a research grant to study molecular biology at the world-renowned Pasteur Institute in Paris, France.

Upon graduating, Dr. Bartholomew moved to Oregon and completed an internship and residency in surgery at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). He also spent a year as a research associate with the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at OHSU. Dr. Bartholomew was awarded a research grant from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons for gene therapy in adult stem cells derived from fat for use in tissue engineering. He also served as chief resident at the conclusion of his residency.

Dr. Bartholomew went on to complete advanced training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California. While at UC Davis, Dr. Bartholomew served as chief resident and received training in all aspects of plastic and reconstructive surgery including breast reconstruction, aesthetic surgery and hand surgery.
