About Me

I believe that every patient presents in a unique fashion, and as such requires individualized attention to best approach their healthcare needs. Since the gastrointestinal system is so broad, I believe strongly that you cannot treat a single system without addressing a person in their entirety.

- David Nolan, MD

Dr. Nolan chose gastroenterology because of the unique position gastroenterologists are in to not only diagnose and treat patients, but to prevent some of the most serious and devastating illnesses before they have a chance to spread. The breadth of clinical and endoscopic procedures available give us a toolbox unlike anything else in the medical or surgical specialties to accomplish this goal.

Most importantly, Dr. Nolan treats people as individuals and not diseases. His training and prior practice has always included a broad scope of practice from clinical examination and differential diagnosis to advanced endoscopy. Dr. Nolan received outstanding training at the University of California in Irvine, under the mentorship of world class innovators such as Dr. Kenneth Chang, Dr. Timothy Morgan and Dr. John Lee.

Dr. Nolan enjoys learning about his patients and becoming a part of their lives. The most meaningful interactions are those in which he can provide insight that may have been previously overlooked and apply that to the patient's care plan. His thorough approach to patient care starts with listening to their whole story and trying to not only incorporate available data, but to collect and assess their situation with fresh eyes.

Other Interests:

Dr. Nolan loves the outdoors – hiking, camping, fishing, and most importantly trail running. The Portland area not only has all these great amenities, but also the convenience of a larger metro area without the feel of a concrete jungle. Born in Ireland, Dr. Nolan also finds that the Portland area has the closest weather to what he grew up in and loves.

Outside of work, Dr. Nolan’s hobbies include hiking, trail running, and fly fishing. When at home, he loves to cook for his family and play with his young son. During the first year of the COVID pandemic, he also took up home brewing – which he finds to be an incredibly fun and challenging hobby, and also incorporates his undergraduate degree in microbiology!
