Canalith Repositioning Procedure - ENT East Division
Post-repositioning Instructions
You have been treated with a canalith repositioning procedure (also known as the Epley or the Semont Maneuver) designed to treat Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). This condition results from small dislodged crystals within the inner ear. The canalith repositioning procedure is designed to move these crystals from the balance portion of the inner ear back into their correct orientation. Only one ear is treated at a time, which will be identified by your physician or therapist. After the procedure, please:
- Keep the head upright and as close to vertical as you are able to 48 hours after treatment:
- You may recline with the head propped up to vertical.
- You may rotate the head.
- Please try not to tip the head down, back, or to the side. You can rotate the head (but do not shake it).
- After the first 48 hours, you may lie down, tip the head and sleep normally for the next four days, except:
- Stay off your _____ side when laying down.
- Do not tip the head back and to the _____ side.
- On the sixth day after the treatment, resume all normal activities. Try to provoke your dizziness before seeing your doctor again.
If you accidentally tip your head or lay down, continue following these instructions unless the dizziness has recurred. If dizziness occurs when this happens, you will need to be seen and possibly treated again.
